What is Chain-key USDT?
Overview
Chain-key USDT (ckUSDT) is a digital equivalent of USDT that operates on the Internet Computer Protocol network. It allows users and smart contracts to send and receive USDT value across the Internet Computer and Ethereum blockchains within seconds at negligible costs. The token serves applications requiring stablecoin functionality without traditional bridge intermediaries.
How it works
ckUSDT is built from two canister smart contracts on ICP that use replicated HTTPS outcalls to Ethereum nodes for state reading and transaction submission, combined with chain-key ECDSA signatures to sign those transactions. The ckETH minter and ckUSDT ledger contracts work together to facilitate transfers between the two networks. The token adheres to ICRC-1 and ICRC-2 fungible token standards, enabling wallet support across the Internet Computer ecosystem.
Peg and backing
ckUSDT maintains a 1:1 peg with USDT through full backing by actual USDT reserves. The chain-key technology architecture ensures users can send and receive value to and from the Ethereum network while preserving the backing guarantee. No separate stabilization mechanism is described.
Supply
Circulating supply is approximately 869 thousand tokens with no fixed maximum supply. Token issuance occurs through minting when users deposit USDT, and tokens are burned when redeemed for underlying USDT.
