What is Bitcoin?
Origin and use
Bitcoin's first block was mined on 3 January 2009. Its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, published the white paper in 2008 and remains unidentified. BTC is used for peer-to-peer payments, cross-border transfers and settlement through the Lightning Network.
Technology and supply
The network uses SHA-256 Proof of Work and the UTXO transaction model. Maximum supply is 21 million BTC. Blocks average ten minutes, and the mining subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years. Transaction fees are paid in BTC.
