What is Dogecoin?
Creation and payments
Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin in December 2013. Its initial software descended from Luckycoin and Litecoin. The Shiba Inu identity came from the Doge internet meme. DOGE is used for transfers, merchant payments and online tipping. Development continues through public contributions to Dogecoin Core.
Mining and transaction records
Dogecoin uses Scrypt Proof of Work to secure its blockchain. AuxPoW allows miners to produce Dogecoin proofs alongside other compatible Scrypt chains, including Litecoin. The protocol targets a new block every minute. DigiShield adjusts mining difficulty after each block. Transactions are recorded on a public ledger maintained by independently operated nodes.
Issuance and fees
Every block now creates 10,000 DOGE as its mining subsidy. This schedule adds approximately 5.26 billion coins annually if blocks follow the target interval. Dogecoin therefore has no fixed maximum supply. The annual increase stays constant in coin terms, so its percentage of total supply declines over time. Miners also receive transaction fees paid in DOGE.
