What is Vara Network?
Overview
Vara Network is the first standalone blockchain built on Gear Protocol, a smart contract platform targeting Web3 developers seeking to deploy complex infrastructure and next-generation dApps. It combines WebAssembly-based execution with the actor model—a computing primitive from distributed systems architecture—and persistent memory to enable efficient parallel processing. The platform addresses the need for faster, more intuitive development environments that bridge Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 development practices.
How it works
Vara is built on Substrate, Polkadot's framework, and uses a WebAssembly virtual machine for smart contract execution. The network launched its Proof of Authority consensus phase in Q1 2023. It employs the actor model and persistent memory to support parallel execution and asynchronous programming, enabling high throughput and reduced latency for dApps.
Token and supply
VARA serves as the network's native asset with a total supply of approximately 10 billion tokens. The token is used for transaction fees, staking for network security, governance participation, and gas pool reservoirs for transaction cost reservation. Block rewards are being explored for distribution to dApp developers as part of the protocol's incentive structure.
Team and history
Vara Network was created by Nikolay Volf, a core Polkadot developer, who began building the platform in 2021 using Substrate. The project raised $12 million in a December 2021 venture round led by Blockchange Venture, with participation from Three Arrows Capital, Lemniscap, and other leading crypto funds, along with Dr. Gavin Wood as an individual investor.
