What is Aptos?
Network and programming
Aptos mainnet launched on October 12, 2022. Aptos Labs cofounder Avery Ching is among the project's original technical leaders. Contracts are written in Move, whose resource model defines ownership and permissions for on-chain assets. The Block-STM execution engine processes compatible transactions concurrently. Conflicting operations are checked and reexecuted to preserve a consistent ledger state.
Token functions
APT pays transaction and storage charges. Its smallest denomination is the octa, equal to one hundred-millionth of an APT. Validators and delegated stakers commit the asset to network security. Staked voting power participates in governance decisions about upgrades and protocol parameters. Validator performance and the configured reward rate determine staking emissions.
Issuance and burns
The network began with one billion APT. Initial allocations covered the community, core contributors, the foundation, and investors. Staking rewards add tokens, while transaction fees are burned. Governance adopted a supply cap of 2.1 billion APT in 2026. The official supply framework makes changes to that ceiling subject to governance approval. Vesting releases and staking issuance remain separate sources of changes in tradable supply.
