What is Astar?
Network and founder
Astar was founded by Sota Watanabe and launched its Polkadot mainnet in 2022. Its runtime is built on Substrate. Collators produce parachain blocks, while finality comes from the Polkadot Relay Chain's nominated proof-of-stake validators. Developers can deploy Solidity contracts through the EVM or Rust-based ink! contracts through the WebAssembly environment. ASTR pays transaction fees and participates in on-chain governance.
Application staking
dApp staking lets holders allocate ASTR to eligible applications. The protocol distributes rewards to both supporting stakers and participating developers. Registration and ranking determine which applications qualify for developer allocations. Tokenomics 3.0 limits the rewarded active set to 16 applications per era. The revised model uses a yearly staking cycle and removes the former bonus reward allocation.
Emission model
Tokenomics 3.0 became active through governance in March 2026. It reduced the theoretical annual inflation ceiling from seven percent to five and a half percent. A decay factor lowers new issuance with each block. This model makes supply converge toward approximately ten billion ASTR over time. Actual issuance depends on staking participation, while permanent burns reduce the effective supply ceiling.
