What is Cosmos Hub?
Origins and architecture
Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman introduced the Cosmos vision in a 2016 whitepaper. Cosmos Hub launched its Mainnet in March 2019. It combines the Cosmos SDK with CometBFT consensus and IBC connectivity. The SDK supplies modular blockchain application components. CometBFT coordinates validators and finalizes the Hub's blocks.
Staking and governance
ATOM holders can delegate to validators that secure Cosmos Hub. Validators earn rewards and charge commission on delegated stake. Misconduct and qualifying availability failures can trigger slashing. Staked ATOM also provides voting power over Hub proposals. Governance can change network parameters, approve upgrades and direct community funds.
Issuance and interoperability
ATOM has no fixed maximum supply. New issuance supports the Hub's staking rewards. Its variable inflation model responds to the proportion of tokens bonded for staking. IBC connects independently operated blockchains using verified messages. Other Cosmos chains can issue their own assets, so ATOM's native security and fee functions apply specifically to Cosmos Hub.
