What is Avalanche?

Launch and chain roles

Avalanche mainnet launched in September 2020. Ava Labs, co-founded by Emin Gun Sirer, contributes to its development. The C-Chain runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. The P-Chain manages validator participation and coordinates Avalanche Layer 1 networks. The X-Chain handles the creation and transfer of digital assets.

Consensus and customization

The Primary Network uses proof of stake with Snowman-family consensus. Validators repeatedly sample other validators to converge on a transaction ordering. All three Primary Network chains now use linear-chain consensus. Additional Avalanche Layer 1s can define their own execution environments and validator arrangements. Their applications can therefore operate under rules tailored to a particular workload.

AVAX economics

AVAX has a maximum supply of 720 million coins. Half of that limit was created at genesis. The remaining issuance is allocated to staking rewards under protocol rules. Primary Network transaction charges are paid in AVAX and destroyed. Validators that fail reward requirements can lose their reward entitlement without having their staked principal slashed.
