What is Basic Attention?
Launch and supply
Brave introduced Basic Attention Token in May 2017. Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy co-founded the browser company. The token was issued using Ethereum's ERC-20 standard. Its fixed supply is 1.5 billion BAT. The launch sale distributed 1 billion tokens. The remaining allocation supported development and the user-growth program.
Advertising and creator payments
Brave Rewards lets eligible users opt into supported advertising. The browser can match advertisements using information processed on the user's device. Qualifying advertising participation earns BAT under the program's rules. Advertiser spending supplies the economic funding for those rewards. Users can also contribute BAT to participating publishers and creators. Holding the token alone does not require users to enable advertising.
Settlement options
Ethereum remains BAT's original issuance network. Brave also supports self-custody reward payments on Solana in eligible countries. These payouts use a Wormhole-bridged BAT representation. Users connect a supported wallet to receive their rewards onchain. The bridge representation and the original ERC-20 token use different transaction infrastructure. Rewards reuse the existing token economy rather than creating a new inflationary BAT supply.
