What is Compound?
Protocol and distribution
Compound provides smart-contract markets for supplying and borrowing crypto assets. Suppliers receive interest under each market's utilization and rate model. Borrowing requires collateral under the applicable risk parameters. COMP governs the system rather than representing an individual lending deposit. Community governance took over protocol administration in April 2020. Distribution to protocol users began in June of that year.
Voting and execution
Holders delegate COMP voting power to themselves or another address. Delegation assigns votes without transferring ownership of the underlying tokens. Delegates submit and vote on proposals subject to the configured thresholds. Approved proposals pass through a timelock before execution. Governance can change risk parameters, introduce supported markets and upgrade controlled contracts. Compound III deployments use governance-controlled components and cross-chain administration where required.
Issuance and role
The token's total issuance is ten million COMP. Its allocation included users, contributors, investors and community governance resources. Scheduled distributions release allocated tokens rather than creating lending interest in COMP for every holder. Interest-bearing deposit positions and COMP governance balances are separate assets. COMP is an Ethereum ERC-20 token, with transaction execution funded by the relevant network's gas asset.
