What is Lido DAO?
Protocol and token
Lido enables ETH to be staked through its protocol while issuing a liquid representation of the staking position. Its core pool uses stETH for that representation. The wrapped form, wstETH, represents the position through a changing conversion rate rather than a rebasing balance. LDO was introduced in January 2021. One billion LDO were minted in the initial token allocation. The distribution included the DAO treasury, investors, developers, founding contributors and early operators.
Governance
LDO holders participate in decisions about protocol parameters and treasury spending. Governance also influences operator arrangements and protocol upgrades. Voting uses both discussion and formal proposal procedures. Core governance changes are subject to Lido's Dual Governance safeguards. That system lets stETH and wstETH holders signal opposition to contentious changes. Its dynamic delay mechanism provides an exit opportunity before those changes take effect.
Staking architecture
Lido's pooled staking infrastructure delegates validation work to participating Ethereum operators. Newer stVault infrastructure supports isolated staking configurations with choices over operators and fee terms. Access to stETH liquidity can be connected to those vault positions. The stake underlying these products is ETH. LDO governs the infrastructure rather than functioning as the liquid ETH receipt. Holding LDO alone does not create a claim on an individual stETH staking position.
