What is Chainlink?
Origins and services
Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis co-founded Chainlink. Its first white paper was published on 4 September 2017, with Ari Juels as a co-author. The platform supplies price feeds, verifiable randomness, automation and cross-chain messaging. These services let applications use information and actions beyond their own blockchain.
Oracle architecture
Chainlink operates through separate decentralized oracle networks configured for particular services. Data-feed nodes obtain observations from external sources and combine them into reports. Offchain Reporting moves aggregation away from the destination chain before a report is submitted onchain. Smart contracts read the published results through oracle interfaces. The Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol carries messages and supported token transfers between connected networks.
LINK mechanics
LINK has a fixed maximum supply of one billion tokens. Its Ethereum implementation supports ERC-20 transfers with additional ERC-677 functionality. LINK pays oracle operators and participates in the network's staking system. Staking links deposited tokens to the security of supported oracle services. Payment Abstraction converts supported payment assets into LINK. The Chainlink Reserve accumulates LINK using revenue from onchain and offchain services.
