What is Mantle?

Origins and token allocation

Mantle emerged from the BitDAO ecosystem in 2023. Eligible BIT balances were exchanged for the new MNT token. Governance excluded three billion treasury-held BIT from that conversion through the MIP-23 supply optimization. The resulting initial allocation was 6,219,316,768 MNT. Mantle Network's mainnet alpha also opened in 2023.

Layer 2 technology

Mantle Network executes Ethereum-compatible smart contracts as a Layer 2. Its modular design separates execution, data availability and settlement functions. EigenDA supplies the data-availability component. The network uses zero-knowledge validity proofs within its Ethereum settlement architecture. MNT is the native gas asset on Mantle, with an ERC-20 representation on Ethereum and a wrapped form for applications.

Governance and treasury

Each MNT contributes voting weight in the ecosystem's governance process. Proposals cover operating budgets, product initiatives and deployment of treasury capital. Treasury holdings are distinguished from circulating tokens. Transfers into budget treasuries require governance authorization before funds are distributed. Mantle Rewards Station accepts MNT locks, and those positions can also contribute to proposal voting.
