What is Moonriver?
Original network
Moonriver served as a canary environment for Moonbeam-related development. Its original chain supported Ethereum-style contracts and tooling. MOVR paid transaction fees on that network. Collators assembled parachain blocks for validation within the Kusama system. Holders could delegate MOVR to participate in its collator-staking mechanism.
Base migration
The project announced the migration to Base in July 2026. The published conversion ratio was one old MOVR for one Base MOVR. The process used an intermediate xcMOVR representation on Moonbeam. The migration portal then relayed the locked assets to the Base token. The new representation uses Base's ERC-20 infrastructure. Its transfers use Base rather than the legacy Moonriver parachain.
