What is THORChain?
Native-asset swaps
THORChain lets users exchange assets across supported blockchains through shared liquidity pools. Each pool pairs its external asset with RUNE. A swap between two external assets therefore uses RUNE as the intermediate settlement asset. Users receive the native destination asset rather than a THORChain-issued wrapped version. Node operators coordinate observations and outbound transfers under the network's signing rules.
Liquidity and security
Liquidity providers deposit assets into pools and receive a claim on the pool's holdings. Node operators bond RUNE to support network security. Protocol rules connect bond requirements with the value controlled by the network. Trading fees and system income fund liquidity and node incentives. Operators can adjust supported network parameters through the Mimir governance mechanism. RUNE also pays fees on THORChain itself.
Supply changes
The original token allocation was designed around a 500 million RUNE ceiling. A 2026 supply restructuring removed roughly 65 million reserve tokens and brought total supply to approximately 360 million at that point. The upgrade also removed the former lending system's minting path. Later burns reduce the remaining issuance. The September 2026 income configuration allocates 1% of system income to burning and 20% to protocol-owned liquidity. These percentages are configurable network settings rather than immutable token rules.
