What is Shiba Inu?

Origin and allocation

Shiba Inu began as an experiment in community-led cryptocurrency development. Its creator used the name Ryoshi rather than a disclosed legal identity. The initial issuance consisted of one quadrillion SHIB. Half was assigned to Uniswap liquidity, while the other half went to Vitalik Buterin. Buterin subsequently destroyed roughly 410 trillion tokens in May 2021 and donated part of his remaining allocation.

Token mechanics

SHIB follows Ethereum's ERC-20 standard. Transfers update a token contract rather than a separate SHIB blockchain. Ethereum gas charges are settled in ETH. Community burns move SHIB into inaccessible addresses, reducing the amount available for circulation. These transfers should be distinguished from the contract's original issuance figure.

Applications and infrastructure

ShibaSwap supports token exchanges and liquidity pools within the ecosystem. Its Bury contracts accept SHIB deposits and issue xSHIB to represent those positions. Shibarium provides a separate Ethereum-connected network with EVM execution. That network uses BONE for transaction fees and validator staking. SHIB, BONE, LEASH and TREAT have distinct roles across the project's applications.
