What is Starknet?
Rollup and development
StarkWare developed Starknet, which has operated since 2021. The Starknet Foundation supports ecosystem development and decentralization. Its first broad STRK distribution began in February 2024. Transactions execute on Starknet, while cryptographic validity proofs are verified through Ethereum. Contracts use Cairo, a language designed for provable computation. Native account abstraction allows accounts to implement their own signature and transaction rules.
Fees and staking
STRK is the network's native fee token. Staking went live in November 2024 and is expanding through successive decentralization stages. Validators stake STRK and run the required node software. Delegators can assign tokens to validators without operating a node themselves. Starknet also supports staking eligible tokenized Bitcoin assets, with rewards paid in STRK. These mechanisms are part of its transition toward decentralized proof-of-stake operation.
Supply and governance
The initial supply was ten billion STRK. It is not a permanent maximum because staking rewards are funded through additional minting. The minting curve links issuance to staking participation. STRK holders can participate in votes affecting protocol development and token parameters.
