What is 0x Protocol?
Trading infrastructure
0x provides contracts and tools for exchanging tokenized assets. Applications use its services to obtain quotes and route transactions through available liquidity. Signed orders can be prepared off-chain and executed through on-chain settlement. The infrastructure also connects applications to liquidity from automated market makers. Traders authorize transactions with their wallets, while smart contracts perform the asset exchange.
ZRX history
ZRX was issued in 2017 with a fixed supply of one billion tokens. Its original design connected the token to protocol governance and staking. Staking pools supported market-maker participation in an earlier fee model. Those historical functions should be distinguished from ordinary token ownership today. ZRX remains an ERC-20 asset rather than the native gas coin of a separate 0x blockchain.
Current protocol
0x deployed its Settler system in mid-2024. This effectively superseded the older Exchange Proxy architecture. The project's June 2026 support guidance describes 0x governance as dormant following that change. Legacy staking balances can still be withdrawn using the appropriate contracts. Holding ZRX does not automatically produce fees from every transaction routed through 0x.
