What is ao Computer?
Computational model
AO uses an actor model rather than a single shared execution state. Applications run as independent processes that exchange messages. Their message histories are recorded on Arweave. Compute operators can reconstruct process state from those inputs. Developers can choose execution environments and security arrangements appropriate to an application. This separates the storage of interaction records from the work of calculating their results.
Network development
AO's testnet launched on February 27, 2024. Its later HyperBEAM environment provides direct HTTP access to process state. That interface supports web applications without relying on the earlier dry-run request pattern. The network can host agents, games and financial applications. Node operators compete to provide computation and message-related services.
Token economics
The documented maximum supply is twenty-one million AO. Issuance declines continuously as the remaining unissued supply shrinks. Its effective emission half-life is about four years, rather than a sudden reward cut at a particular block. The economic design uses token collateral to secure message passing. AO is distinct from AR, which pays for the underlying Arweave storage. Holding one does not turn it into the other network's native payment asset.
