What is Arweave?
Permanent data storage
Arweave's mainnet launched in 2018. Its early technical design was written by Sam Williams and William Jones. The network stores files and transaction records in a structure called the blockweave. Users pay for storage upfront rather than renewing an individual storage subscription. Gateways and applications expose the stored data through ordinary web interfaces. The permaweb uses this storage layer for persistent sites, documents and application data.
Mining and endowment
Miners must provide cryptographic evidence that they can access previously stored data. This ties block production to the preservation of the network's history. The proof-of-access family of mechanisms incentivizes replication and rapid retrieval. A portion of storage payments accumulates in an endowment. That reserve supports future storage rewards when ordinary rewards and fees are insufficient. Continued retention therefore depends on both the protocol's storage proofs and its funding model.
AR supply and payments
AR is the native payment asset for uploads and network transactions. Its maximum issuance is 66 million tokens. Fifty-five million were created initially, with the remaining eleven million allocated to mining rewards. Spending AR for an upload pays for the storage commitment rather than transferring ownership of the uploaded information. Applications can package or sponsor uploads while settling the underlying storage charge in AR.
