What is Aztec?
Private execution
Aztec settles on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs. Private functions execute and are proved on the user's device. Encrypted notes hold private state, while public operations run in the Aztec Virtual Machine. Applications can combine private and public functions within one system. The network uses its own execution environment rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
Fees, staking and governance
AZTEC is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Bridging it into Aztec creates Fee Juice, a non-transferable balance used for transaction fees. The protocol measures computation and data-availability costs in mana. Operators stake AZTEC to participate in block production and can face slashing. Staked or governance-locked tokens also support votes on upgrades and network parameters.
Supply and rewards
The token documentation lists a total supply of 10.35 billion AZTEC. Network rewards support sequencers and provers. Current checkpoint distributions release tokens previously minted into the reward-distributor contract. Transaction fees are divided between those operators after the applicable burn component. The broader issuance design includes controlled inflation, so the listed supply is not an immutable lifetime cap.
