What is Balancer?
Overview
Balancer provides foundational technology for building and operating automated market makers without requiring permission. The protocol serves both developers creating custom pool designs and liquidity providers seeking yield opportunities. Its architecture supports multiple pool types—both internally developed (Weighted Pools, Boosted Pools, stablecoin pools with MEV protection) and community-built variants (Concentrated Liquidity, CoW AMMs, FxPools).
How it works
Balancer uses a 'Vault' architecture that centralizes core functionality into a singleton contract, allowing external developers to design custom pools without duplicating base logic. The protocol is deployed across multiple blockchain networks including Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Harmony, NEAR, Base, and others. This design enables efficient liquidity pooling while reducing MEV and supporting yield-bearing tokens.
Token and supply
BAL is the protocol's native token with a maximum supply of 96.2 million. The total supply is 72.4 million BAL. The token is used for governance and incentivizing liquidity provision within the Balancer ecosystem.
