What is Beam?

Network

Beam is a sovereign, open-source network built with the Avalanche technology stack. It supports smart contracts and applications that manage digital assets. BEAM pays gas for transactions on the Beam Network. Games can use these transactions for asset ownership, exchange and in-game interactions. The ecosystem also provides development tools for integrating blockchain functionality into applications.

Staking and use

Following its Horizon upgrade, Beam uses proof of stake for network validation. Validators secure the chain, while delegators can allocate BEAM and Node Tokens through the staking system. These are distinct token types with separate roles. BEAM also serves as a payment asset for supported in-game tokens and NFTs. Tokenholders can participate in ecosystem governance.

Migration and supply

BEAM replaced Merit Circle's MC token through a migration that began in October 2023. The conversion issued 100 BEAM for each eligible MC. The migration window closed in October 2024. Ecosystem buybacks and burns have subsequently removed tokens from circulation.
