What is Bitcoin Cash?

Chain split and purpose

Bitcoin Cash separated from Bitcoin on August 1, 2017, at block 478558. The split followed a disagreement over transaction capacity and scaling. BCH retained Bitcoin's transaction history up to the fork. Its development focuses on direct payments and greater transaction capacity within the base chain. Independent client implementations maintain the network's consensus rules.

Validation and transactions

Miners secure Bitcoin Cash with SHA-256 proof of work. Transactions spend unspent outputs and create new outputs for recipients or change. BCH pays miner fees for transaction inclusion. The ASERT algorithm adjusts mining difficulty in response to changes in block production. An adaptive block-size limit was introduced in the May 2024 upgrade.

Supply and programmable assets

BCH has a maximum supply of 21 million coins. Mining creates new currency under the protocol's declining subsidy schedule. CashTokens, activated in 2023, add native fungible tokens and non-fungible assets. Their validation is integrated into the transaction system. Bitcoin Cash scripts can combine these assets with programmable spending conditions.
