What is Bittensor?
Network and contributors
Bittensor was co-founded by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana. Independent subnets define tasks such as model inference, prediction or storage. Miners perform those tasks, while subnet validators evaluate their output. The Substrate-based Subtensor blockchain records participation, stake and reward allocations. Its chain consensus currently uses authorised block producers with Aura and GRANDPA.
Incentives and subnet tokens
Yuma Consensus aggregates stake-weighted evaluations to calculate participant incentives. It performs this reward function separately from blockchain finality. The Dynamic TAO upgrade introduced subnet-specific alpha tokens in February 2025. Staking TAO into a subnet exchanges it for that subnet's alpha through an on-chain pool. Root staking instead keeps the position denominated in TAO.
Supply and fees
TAO has a maximum issuance of 21 million units. Emission halves at supply thresholds rather than on a fixed calendar date. The first reduction occurred in December 2025, taking issuance from one TAO to half a TAO per block. Blocks target a twelve-second interval. TAO also pays transaction charges and supplies one side of subnet liquidity pools. Recycled TAO can be issued again within the supply accounting rules, which can delay subsequent halving thresholds.
