What is BitTorrent?
Origin and redenomination
The token extends the BitTorrent ecosystem with economic incentives for participating users and infrastructure providers. BTT initially operated as a token on TRON. BitTorrent Chain launched in December 2021. The accompanying redenomination converted each old BTT into 1,000 new BTT. The total denomination changed from 990 billion to 990 trillion units. This conversion increased the number of units without multiplying each holder's proportional ownership.
Network security
BitTorrent Chain uses a proof-of-stake validator system. BTT pays transaction fees on the chain. Validators stake BTT and participate in block production and checkpoint procedures. Other holders can delegate tokens to validators. Rewards are linked to those network roles. Token transfers on TRON and native activity on BitTorrent Chain use distinct transaction environments.
Ecosystem uses
BTT was designed to support incentives for bandwidth and resource sharing within BitTorrent products. BitTorrent Speed applies token incentives to peer participation. The wider ecosystem also includes decentralized file-storage infrastructure. These services connect token payments with contributions of network resources. BitTorrent Chain's former cross-chain bridge has been discontinued. The chain's gas and staking functions are separate from that retired bridge service.
