What is Stacks?
Origins and execution
Stacks originated as Blockstack, founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea. Stacks 2.0 launched in January 2021. Its contracts use Clarity, a language deployed as readable code rather than compiled EVM bytecode. Applications run on the Stacks ledger while block commitments link its history to Bitcoin. The Nakamoto upgrade introduced faster block production and Bitcoin-linked finality in 2024.
Mining and stacking
Proof of Transfer selects Stacks miners through bitcoin commitments. Miners compete for STX rewards by spending BTC. STX holders can lock tokens through Stacking and receive bitcoin distributed by the protocol. Stackers also participate as signers who approve valid Stacks blocks. This combines bitcoin-funded miner selection with STX-weighted block validation.
Utility and issuance
STX pays for transaction processing and contract execution on Stacks. The separate sBTC asset represents bitcoin usable within Stacks applications. STX issuance compensates network miners under a scheduled reward policy. The 2025 SIP-031 upgrade added 500 million STX in growth emissions over five years for the Stacks Endowment. Those additional emissions supplement the mining schedule and finance ecosystem development.
