What is Canton?
Launch and purpose
Canton Coin launched alongside the Global Synchronizer on July 1, 2024. Digital Asset developed the underlying Canton protocol and Daml contract technology. Canton connects independently operated applications handling assets such as securities, collateral and tokenized cash. Each application can set its own access rules. The synchronizer coordinates transactions spanning these separate systems.
Privacy and coordination
Daml contracts specify which parties can act on and observe a contract. Relevant participants validate their portions of a transaction without publishing every business detail to the wider network. Atomic execution allows connected applications to complete a transaction together or reject it together. Super Validators operate the shared synchronizer infrastructure. Its Byzantine fault tolerant consensus requires a two-thirds majority for ordering and confirming messages.
Fees and issuance
Synchronizer traffic fees are quoted in dollars and settled with CC. Coins used for these fees are destroyed. Application operators, users and infrastructure providers can earn minting rights through qualifying activity. CC began without a premine or venture investor token allocation. Its scheduled issuance eventually reaches 2.5 billion coins annually, while fee burning determines the change in circulating supply.
