What is Celestia?
Launch and data availability
Celestia mainnet beta launched on October 31, 2023. Its design separates data availability and ordering from application execution. Rollups publish transaction data as blobs while maintaining their own execution rules. Light nodes test availability by sampling portions of encoded block data. Reed-Solomon encoding supports reconstruction when sufficient shares are available. Namespaced Merkle trees let applications identify and retrieve their own data.
TIA functions
Blob publishers pay fees using TIA. The base chain uses CometBFT and the Cosmos SDK for proof-of-stake consensus. Validators and delegators commit TIA to network security and receive rewards. Holders can participate in proposals governing supported network parameters. Community-pool spending is also decided through governance. An application using Celestia can choose a different token for its own execution fees.
Genesis and inflation
The genesis allocation contained one billion TIA. Continuing staking issuance means this is not a permanent maximum. The v6 upgrade reduced the inflation rate to approximately 2.5% in November 2025. The revised schedule decreases that rate by 6.7% annually until it reaches 1.5%. Genesis vesting releases remain separate from newly issued staking rewards.
