What is Celo?
Network architecture
Celo mainnet launched on April 22, 2020. The network completed its Ethereum Layer 2 transition on March 26, 2025. Its current execution layer is EVM-compatible and uses the OP Stack. Ethereum provides settlement, while EigenDA supplies transaction-data availability. A sequencer collects transactions, executes contracts and submits batches for settlement. This replaces the former Layer 1 block-production model.
Payments and token mechanics
Celo is built around inexpensive transfers and mobile wallet applications. Fee abstraction allows transaction charges to be paid in several approved tokens. Applications include stablecoin payments, decentralized finance and MiniPay-based services. CELO itself works through both native transfers and an ERC-20-compatible interface. The two interfaces share the same underlying balance without requiring a wrapped version.
Supply and participation
CELO has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion units. Holders can lock CELO to vote on protocol governance and support elected community RPC providers. The same locked balance can support governance and provider voting concurrently. The documented unlocking delay is three days. Network revenue flows into the DAO-governed community fund, with non-CELO revenue used for CELO buybacks under the current economic framework.
