What is Cronos?
Launch and networks
Crypto.com introduced CRO in 2018, initially as an Ethereum token. The Crypto.org mainnet, now called Cronos POS, followed in March 2021. Cronos EVM opened on November 8 of the same year. The CRO name changed from Crypto.org Coin to Cronos in February 2022. Native CRO and its ERC-20 representation operate on different networks.
Technology and uses
Cronos EVM combines Ethereum contract execution with the Cosmos SDK. Solidity applications can use familiar Ethereum wallets and development tools. Its validator arrangement is a permissioned form of proof of stake, commonly described as proof of authority. Cronos POS uses CRO delegation to support its own validators and governance. IBC connects supported Cosmos networks, while CRO pays transaction charges on both Cronos chains.
Supply policy
The ecosystem's supply policy sets a ceiling of 100 billion CRO. A 2021 burn removed 70 billion, temporarily reducing the original allocation to 30 billion. The 2025 strategic-reserve upgrade recreated the 70-billion allocation with monthly vesting over five years. Reserve balances and circulating tokens therefore represent different quantities. Validator rewards and their emission parameters are controlled by the Cronos POS protocol and governance.
