What is DigiByte?
Launch and ledger
DigiByte started on January 10, 2014. DGB is its native currency for payments and transaction fees. The network uses unspent transaction outputs, with each transfer consuming existing outputs and creating new ones. Its block target is 15 seconds. SegWit support separates signature data from the transaction structure used to calculate transaction identifiers.
Mining design
Five algorithms share block production: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt. Each algorithm maintains its own mining difficulty. DigiShield and MultiShield adjust difficulty in response to changing hash power. Odocrypt periodically changes its hashing design to limit the usefulness of fixed-function mining hardware. Miners receive block rewards and the fees paid by transactions included in their blocks.
Supply and applications
The issuance schedule limits the total number of DGB to 21 billion. Mining rewards decline monthly instead of following Bitcoin's discrete four-year halvings. DigiAssets provides a protocol for issuing and transferring custom digital assets using DigiByte transactions. Digi-ID supports authentication through cryptographic signatures without requiring a blockchain transaction for each login. DigiByte Core is open-source software, allowing node operators to independently validate the ledger and its monetary rules.
