What is Dog (Bitcoin)?
Launch and distribution
The project emerged from the Runestone community built around Bitcoin Ordinals. Leonidas organized Runestone and played a central role in DOG's launch. DOG was etched as Rune number three when Runes activated around Bitcoin's 2024 halving. The distribution used an airdrop rather than a public token sale. No separate team allocation was reserved from that distribution.
Runes technology
Runes encode fungible-token instructions in Bitcoin transactions. Their balances are assigned to transaction outputs and move when those outputs are spent. A transaction's runestone message defines how token amounts are allocated to new outputs. These messages use Bitcoin's OP_RETURN output structure. DOG therefore relies on Bitcoin transactions and compatible Rune indexing rather than an Ethereum token contract.
Supply and use
DOG serves as the meme asset of its Bitcoin community. Its supply was created for the airdrop instead of being issued as ongoing miner rewards. Transfers require Bitcoin network fees paid in BTC. Bitcoin miners secure the transactions carrying DOG but receive BTC rewards. Compatible wallets and trading venues handle the Rune balances and transfers.
