What is EigenCloud (prev. EigenLayer)?
Origins and ecosystem
Eigen Labs was founded by Sreeram Kannan. The Eigen Foundation introduced EIGEN in April 2024. EigenLayer extends staking security to services built outside Ethereum's own consensus. The broader EigenCloud ecosystem includes data availability, verifiable computation and AI services.
Restaking and operators
Participants allocate supported stake to operators serving particular validated services. Service-specific rules define the work and the consequences of failure. Restaked ETH supports tasks with objectively attributable faults. EIGEN adds a model for faults on which informed observers can agree even when a contract cannot independently prove them. The intended uses include incorrect oracle data, withheld information and other externally observed service failures.
Token design
The whitepaper separates ordinary EIGEN holdings from bEIGEN, the backing token used in its intersubjective staking design. This arrangement isolates ordinary token applications from the proposed dispute and forking process. Staking obligations depend on the operator and service selected. They do not convert EIGEN into the gas asset for Ethereum transactions.
Issuance
The initial token supply was approximately 1.674 billion EIGEN. The launch allocation assigned 45% to community uses, 29.5% to investors and 25.5% to early contributors. Release schedules distribute those allocations over time. Programmatic staking incentives can create additional EIGEN, so the initial supply is not an immutable maximum.
