What is MultiversX?
Network origins
Elrond's mainnet launched on July 30, 2020. Beniamin Mincu is one of the project's co-founders. The network later adopted the MultiversX name. Its architecture divides transaction processing and account state between execution shards. A coordinating metachain handles cross-shard information. Smart contracts compile to WebAssembly, with Rust tooling available to developers.
Validation and applications
Secure Proof of Stake selects validators from participants staking EGLD. Validators are redistributed between shards to prevent permanent concentration in a particular group. Token holders can delegate through staking providers. EGLD pays for transfers, token operations and contract execution. The network's native token system supports assets without requiring every transfer to execute an independent token contract.
Updated monetary policy
The initial issuance contained 20 million EGLD. The original economic design proposed a theoretical maximum of approximately 31.4 million. Governance replaced that fixed-cap policy in October 2025. Staking V5 began implementing the updated economics in December 2025. The new framework uses ongoing issuance and transaction-fee burns. Its emission allocation supports staking rewards, ecosystem growth, user growth and protocol sustainability. Growth-related releases are subject to the framework's performance conditions.
