What is Espresso?
Network architecture
Espresso's first mainnet launched in November 2024. Its HotShot protocol uses Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus. Integrated rollups send blocks to Espresso for confirmation. These confirmations help applications coordinate across chains. Espresso supplies consensus infrastructure while rollups retain their own execution environments.
Staking and validation
The transition to proof-of-stake began in February 2026. Validator voting power depends on staked ESP. HotShot selects the top 100 validators by total stake. Holders can delegate without operating validator hardware. Delegators receive protocol rewards after the operator's commission. Undelegation takes approximately seven days.
Issuance and fees
ESP is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Its initial supply was 3.59 billion. Staking rewards mean it has no fixed maximum supply. Reward rates adjust with the proportion of supply staked. The token design also assigns ESP to data-processing fees within Espresso.
