What is Ethereum?
Origin and use
Ethereum launched on 30 July 2015 after Vitalik Buterin proposed it in 2013. Its eight co-founders are Buterin, Gavin Wood, Joseph Lubin, Jeffrey Wilcke, Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Amir Chetrit and Charles Hoskinson. ETH pays transaction fees, funds validator staking and serves as DeFi collateral.
Technology and supply
Smart contracts run in the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM. Ethereum switched from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake in September 2022. ETH has no fixed supply cap; validator rewards issue coins, while EIP-1559 burns transaction base fees.
