What is Ethereum Name Service?
Names and protocol
Nick Johnson founded Ethereum Name Service in 2017. ENS lets users associate names such as alice.eth with wallet addresses. Resolver contracts can also return content hashes, text records and addresses for other chains. The registry records ownership and the resolver assigned to each name. Native .eth registrations expire unless renewed. Owners can configure subnames or delegate their management. Existing DNS domains can also be imported through the protocol's supported verification process.
ENS token and DAO
The ENS token and DAO launched in November 2021. One hundred million tokens were initially minted. Holders can delegate voting power to representatives. Governance controls relevant protocol parameters, upgrades and treasury spending. The token contract permits DAO-authorized minting of up to two percent per annual mint interval. Registration fees and Ethereum gas are paid in ETH, while ENS supplies governance rights.
ENSv2 development
ENSv2 introduces hierarchical registries and more flexible name permissions. It remains in public testing on Ethereum Sepolia before mainnet deployment. The team cancelled Namechain development in February 2026 and chose Ethereum mainnet for ENSv2. Existing mainnet registrations continue to use the production ENSv1 system.
