What is GALA?
Origin and network
Gala Games was founded by Eric Schiermeyer and Wright Thurston. GALA distribution began in September 2020 without an initial token sale or premine. The ecosystem began with games and player-owned digital items before extending into music, film and broader blockchain applications. GalaChain provides the transaction infrastructure for these products. GALA pays network fees and is used in supported ecosystem purchases.
Nodes and applications
Founder’s Nodes contribute infrastructure services and receive GALA distributions for eligible operation. Running a node requires the appropriate node licence and operational requirements. Each active Founder’s Node receives one vote in the network's node proposals. Node licences can be represented as transferable tokens on GalaChain. GalaSwap and GalaPump add exchange and token-launch activity to the ecosystem.
Issuance changes
In April 2026, node operators approved replacing the previous gap-based emission model with a disinflationary schedule. The approved design starts at 15% annual emissions and reduces that rate by 15% each year. It sets a permanent annual emission floor of 1.5%. The proposal also allocates half of gas fees to node operators and burns the other half. This transition removes the previous 50 billion hard cap, with implementation following the approved vote.
