What is Gas?
Neo N3 services
Neo N3 launched on August 2, 2021 as a new version of the Neo mainnet. The network uses delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance 2.0 for consensus. GAS pays the execution costs of transfers and smart contracts. It also covers services such as native oracle requests and NeoFS storage. GAS is divisible to eight decimal places. Contracts use Neo's virtual machine and native token interfaces.
Governance and distribution
NEO holders elect a council of 21 members. The seven highest-ranked council members operate the consensus nodes. GAS issuance rewards NEO holders, council members and voters supporting elected candidates. The initial N3 allocation divides new GAS into 10% for NEO holders, 10% for council members and 80% for eligible voters. Holding NEO does not require a staking lock to participate in GAS generation. Voting influences the additional rewards a NEO position receives.
Issuance and fees
Neo N3 has no fixed maximum supply of GAS. Its documented block issuance starts at five GAS per block and can be changed through governance. System fees paid for execution are burned. Network fees compensate the consensus nodes processing transactions. The balance between ongoing issuance and fee burning determines changes in the outstanding GAS supply.
