What is Gemini Dollar?
Issuer and reserves
Gemini Dollar entered regulated operation in 2018. Gemini issues the token under New York State Department of Financial Services oversight. Reserves include cash, US Treasury obligations and Treasury-focused money market funds. Gemini keeps the backing assets segregated. Independent accountants examine the relationship between reserves and circulating tokens.
Minting and redemption
Gemini creates GUSD when customers convert dollars into tokens. Redemption removes tokens from circulation and returns dollars. Supply therefore responds to issuance and redemptions rather than a fixed mining schedule. Customers can convert one GUSD into one dollar through Gemini. Secondary-market prices still reflect trading conditions.
Ethereum use
GUSD follows the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum. Wallets and smart contracts can transfer it using Ethereum transactions. Its applications include payments, trading and liquidity provision. External lending or staking services can use GUSD as their underlying asset. The token itself does not distribute reserve income to holders.
