What is Golem?
Origins and supply
Golem began its token crowdfunding on November 11, 2016. Its founding team included Julian Zawistowski, Piotr Janiuk and Aleksandra Skrzypczak. The original asset was called Golem Network Token, or GNT. Migration to the ERC-20 GLM token began in late 2020. GNT converts to GLM at a one-to-one ratio. The migration preserves the combined supply limit rather than creating a second billion-token allocation.
Computing market
Golem connects requestors who need computing power with providers who supply it. Its Yagna software handles communication and operations across the network. Requestors prepare workloads that run on remote provider machines. The virtual-machine runtime uses images in Golem's GVMI format. These images can be built from Docker images with the project's conversion tools. A separate runtime supports WebAssembly code. Provider execution units start and manage the selected runtime.
Payments
Requestors pay providers in GLM for rented resources. Providers earn the token by completing computing work. Golem supports payment routes on Ethereum and Polygon. Polygon reduces the transaction costs associated with small payments. GLM is an application payment token rather than the gas currency of a separate Golem blockchain. Testnet tGLM is a separate testing asset without real financial value.
