What is Handshake?
Overview
Handshake addresses the centralization of internet naming infrastructure, where Certificate Authorities and DNS providers control domain registration and validation. The protocol enables a permissionless system where every peer validates and manages the root naming zone, reducing reliance on trusted intermediaries vulnerable to censorship and compromise. It serves as foundational infrastructure for applications and services seeking to build on a decentralized naming layer resistant to sybil attacks.
How it works
Handshake operates as its own blockchain where network participants validate transactions and maintain the root naming zone collectively. The system uses proof-of-work consensus to secure the network and prevent sybil attacks through increased griefing costs. Users can register and manage top-level domains and other internet names directly on-chain without intermediaries.
Token and supply
HNS is the native asset of the Handshake blockchain, used to register names, pay transaction fees, and participate in the network. Maximum supply is capped at approximately 961.3 million HNS, with total supply around 679.7 million HNS. New tokens are issued through proof-of-work block rewards that gradually decrease over time.
