What is Helium?
Origins and connectivity
The founding Helium team established the business now known as Nova Labs in 2013. Amir Haleem and Shawn Fanning are among its founders. HNT issuance began on July 29, 2019 without a premine. Helium supports LoRaWAN connectivity for connected devices and Wi-Fi infrastructure serving mobile traffic. Independently operated Hotspots provide the physical coverage. The network moved its blockchain operations to Solana on April 18, 2023.
Network payments
HNT rewards eligible Hotspot hosts and network operators. Following the return to a single reward token, IoT and Mobile activity are rewarded in HNT. Wireless data usage is paid for with Data Credits. One Data Credit represents $0.00001 of network usage. These credits are created by burning HNT and cannot be freely transferred after creation.
Emission schedule
Scheduled HNT issuance halves every two years. The documented maximum is approximately 223 million HNT after early issuance fell below its original target. A capped net-emissions mechanism replaces some previously burned HNT to support continuing network rewards. Scheduled emissions and these replacement emissions perform different roles in the supply model. Governance proposals determine changes to reward allocation and network economics.
