What is Hermez Network?
Original network
Hermez used zero-knowledge proofs to compress transaction processing outside Ethereum's main execution layer. Transactions were grouped into batches whose validity could be verified on Ethereum. This design aimed to reduce the cost of transfers while retaining settlement on the underlying network. Jordi Baylina led the Hermez team that joined Polygon. The merger incorporated the project's engineers and technology into Polygon's scaling programme.
Token transition
The 2021 agreement included a proposed conversion of HEZ into MATIC at 3.5 MATIC per HEZ. That ratio belonged to the merger arrangement and was not a general price peg. Polygon said MATIC would take over utility associated with the combined project. Subsequent development contributed to the Polygon zkEVM programme announced in 2022. HEZ therefore represents the earlier Hermez token rather than a separate modern Polygon gas asset. It should also be distinguished from POL, which belongs to Polygon's later token transition. A surviving HEZ balance does not by itself establish that a historical conversion facility remains open.
