What is IOTA?
Origins and upgrade
IOTA began in 2015 with a distributed-ledger design called the Tangle. Its co-founders include Dominik Schiener and Serguei Popov. The nonprofit IOTA Foundation supports protocol development and adoption. The Rebased mainnet upgrade went live on May 5, 2025. It migrated the existing ledger's balances into a new execution and consensus architecture.
Execution and validation
The current Layer 1 runs smart contracts written in Move. Its object-based execution model supports parallel processing of independent transactions. Validators secure the network through delegated proof of stake. Token holders can delegate IOTA to elected validators and earn the applicable staking rewards. IOTA EVM provides a separate Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 connected to the ecosystem.
Gas and applications
IOTA pays for transactions and contract execution on the Layer 1. Network fees contribute to token burning. Storage deposits lock tokens against retained on-chain data. Staking rewards add issuance, so the token no longer follows the original fixed-supply model. The ecosystem applies this infrastructure to digital identity, trade documents, shipment records and tokenized assets. Application access and data permissions remain defined by the relevant contracts and services.
