What is JPY Coin v1?
Prepaid design
The original JPYC system represents prepaid purchasing value denominated in Japanese yen. Its reference unit is one token per yen. The token was implemented using the ERC-20 standard. Its original whitepaper was authored by Noritaka Okabe and Yosui Harasawa for Japan Crypto Asset Market. The design focused on buying goods and services through the issuer's purchasing arrangements. It permitted additional issuance rather than imposing a permanently fixed supply.
Current legacy support
The issuer ended new JPYC Prepaid issuance orders on May 30, 2025. It also discontinued the service that exchanged prepaid v1 for prepaid v2. Existing v1 balances remain usable under the issuer's current support guidance. The support service confirms that holders with only v1 can place prepaid orders. Its guidance links to supported gift-voucher purchasing procedures. Prepaid purchasing rights should be distinguished from ordinary cash redemption. Later versions and the separate redeemable JPYC programme have different contracts and product terms. The v1 asset does not automatically acquire those later products' redemption rights.
