What is Kaia?
Network formation
Kaia mainnet launched on 29 August 2024 following the Klaytn and Finschia merger. Klaytn originated in the Kakao ecosystem, while Finschia originated in the LINE ecosystem. The chain continued from Klaytn's EVM-based infrastructure. KLAY became KAIA, and FNSA holders received a conversion route into the merged asset. The Kaia DLT Foundation supports ecosystem development.
Consensus and application execution
Kaia uses a modified Istanbul BFT consensus mechanism. Consensus nodes select a committee for each block. A verifiable random function participates in committee selection. The committee agrees on blocks before they become final. Ethereum-compatible contracts run through the network's virtual machine. KAIA pays for transfers and contract operations.
Issuance and staking
KAIA uses 18 decimal places, with kei as its smallest unit. The documented issuance policy creates 9.6 KAIA per block. New coins and transaction fees fund validator, community, ecosystem and infrastructure allocations. Governance can change issuance parameters, so the asset does not follow a fixed final supply cap. Public delegation allows holders to support validators and receive a share of applicable staking rewards.
