What is Karat?
Overview
Karat provides infrastructure for applications requiring social verification, data indexing, and login permissions by encrypting user data such as email and social accounts, linking it to blockchain wallets, and storing it on IPFS. Users maintain decentralized control over data access permissions through MPC private key sharing. The protocol hosts over 350 thousand registered identities and serves over 100 applications seeking access to verified user data in its ecosystem.
How it works
Karat operates on ZkSync and uses MPC and zero-knowledge proof technologies to bridge Web2 and Web3 identities. Users mint a Karat ID—an omnichain name service connecting blockchain addresses to social identities—and can issue verifiable credentials linking their social accounts and KYC information on-chain. Applications query these credentials directly and can access user data through the data marketplace while users retain granular control over permission levels.
Token and supply
KAT has a maximum supply of 2 billion tokens. Token allocation designates 70% to 10-year mining managed by a multisig wallet, 10.5% to the team, 10% for operations, 7.5% to investors, and 2% to advisors. Users stake KAT to mint Karat IDs, validators stake to run infrastructure, and applications pay KAT to request user data. Staking rewards and transaction fees drive token circulation; a portion of transaction fees are burned.
