What is Kaspa?
Launch and issuance
Kaspa launched on November 7, 2021, following blockDAG research led by Yonatan Sompolinsky. It began without a premine, token presale or insider allocation. New KAS enters circulation through proof-of-work mining. The issuance schedule limits total supply to approximately 28.7 billion coins. Monthly reductions in mining rewards produce an annual halving of the emission rate.
Consensus and blocks
Mining uses the kHeavyHash algorithm. GHOSTDAG establishes an agreed ordering for parallel blocks rather than discarding every competing block. Kaspa uses a UTXO transaction model. The Crescendo upgrade raised the mainnet block rate to 10 blocks per second in May 2025. The Rust node implementation provides the software foundation for this higher block rate.
Payments and programmability
KAS transfers value and pays transaction fees on the network. Miners receive transaction fees alongside the declining block subsidy. The Toccata hard fork activated on June 30, 2026. It introduced covenant-based spending rules and native proof-verification opcodes for applications. Silverscript compiles higher-level covenant logic into Kaspa Script for execution within the UTXO model.
